Soil Mechanics: Relative Density of Granural Soils
What you’ll learn
What is Relative Density in Granural Soils?
Relative Density is used to describe the state of compactness of granural soils compared to their loosest and densest possible states.
It can be expressed using this formula:
where:
e = void ratio of the soil (in-situ) = void ratio (densest)
= void ratio (loosest}
We can also express Relative Density in terms of dry unit weight:
Where: = dry-unit weight (loosest)
= dry-unit weight (in-situ)
= dry unit weight (densest)
Relative Density Clasifications
Designation | Dr (%) |
---|---|
Very Loose | 0 – 15 |
Loose | 15 – 35 |
Medium Dense | 35 – 70 |
Dense | 70 – 85 |
Very Dense | 85 – 100 |
Suitability Number
What is Suitability Numbers?
These values are used to assess the properties of the granural soils.
Rating as Backfill | Suitability Number |
Excellent | 0 – 10 |
Good | 10 – 20 |
Fair | 20 – 30 |
Poor | 30 – 50 |
Unstable | > 50 |
